I've always dreamt about having beautiful blue tresses and finally managed to make it happen, and I'm gonna share with you how to get Mermaid hair! Just a disclaimer, I'm using the term 'mermaid hair' because when I posted this photo someone left that comment, I know my hair isn't tumblr-worthy so I'm not self-praising. Honestly, it doesn't matter what colour your hair is, we can all have mermaid hair! To me, mermaid hair isn't all about the colour but also how well maintained your tresses are, which brings me to my next point.
If you know me, you will know that I painstakingly curl my hair every time before I head out, that's 35 minutes I can't get back but no regrets! If you, like me, curl/straighten/blow dry your hair, you'll realise that after awhile it becomes very damaged because of the heat. So it is very important to put on heat protectant!
You can't have mermaid hair if your hair is all dry and frizzy (yucks) and if there is anything I can't stand is having a bad hair day or having bad hair. So, how do I keep my hair soft and manageable? I used to be really lazy and my conditioner from Sunsilk usually does the trick, but after having my hair lightened for the 'blue' it became very dry, so I started to use the Intensive Treatment hair mask from OGX.
I put it on once a week before shower and leave it on for about 30 minutes before washing it out. The first time I used it, my hair felt alive again, but it was short-lived and I blame that on my hair stylist who did a horrible job this time. I'll save that story for another time.
Finally! Moving on to the main point, to achieve a better colour payoff it is recommended that you bleach/lighten your hair to a light shade like blonde. If you're naturally blonde, then lucky you!
What I did at the salon: lightened my hair 2 shades lighter from this to a yellow blonde. Then I had blue dye on my hair for about 1-2 hours and only managed to achieve this (you can't even see the blue or any colour other than black) which faded very quickly and by the first week, this was how it looked like. While everyone seemed to love my ash green hair, I almost lost my mind. I called so many salons trying to find one that could redo my hair for me at a lower price, because I've already spent a sum on this, then my friend suggested that I use Manic Panic.
What I did at home: I used Voodoo Blue and Ultra Violet by Manic Panic. I used Ultra Violet to cover up the harsh edge that was separating the black and green (yes, it literally looked like she placed a ruler on my hair and dyed the bottom half green). After that was done, I dyed the ends with Voodoo Blue and let it sit for about 2 hours (you can put it for an hour but I left mine on for a total of 4 hours). 2 hours later, when I checked on the colour I realised that it was becoming too green because of my ash green base. So I mixed both the colours together to get another shade of blue, then, I ran that blue through my hair and at the ends. I was able to cover up the ends more evenly than the middle part, so the inner parts of my hair are teal and the outer parts are blue - at least they weren't patchy, phew!
After a total of 4 hours, I washed off the hair dye and the colour was absolutely gorgeous and also left my hair feeling smooth again! I honestly can't believe that a product that costs a fraction of what I paid for at the salon could make my hair regained its original silkiness! I couldn't have been any happier with my current hair colour and the best part is, I still have quite a lot of dye left so that means I can touch up whenever I want to.
Here's a close up which was taken 2 days after I did my hair. If there's anything I learned, it is to NOT wash your hair that often, this will make sure that the colour doesn't run too soon. I would tell you how many times I've washed my hair since I did it about 2 weeks ago, but I still want to have friends so I shall refrain from that.
The header photo was taken a week after I've done my hair and a few washing later. It's still pretty much blue, but another shade of blue. The green is now more obvious than before and the purple on the outside has faded away although not quite completely.
